Film opening sequence review-
The Last of Us http://www.artofthetitle.com/title/the-last-of-us/#
(Back story on the game, its a horror zombie game all about a fungus that turns people into zombies.)
The title sequence starts off with a bold, simple, white on black text using the Press Gothic font. The title for this game overwhelms the audience, it gives the impression of something big and meaningful. This could mean that the audience is supposed to see the 'Last of us' in this game as a stronger more united humanity. The use of black and white could suggest that the last of use (Being the colour white) are outnumbered and are humanities last hope as the colour white represents heroism and gallant and the colour black means something that is anti-hero and malicious. The title also suggests that the people left on earth (Last of Us) are the subject of this game as the text is the dominant and only object in this shot.
The main images through out the title sequence is these organic structures possibly a fungus or bacteria, these visuals could have two different meanings. They could represent the infections that is wiping out humanity in that it starts from a single point and spreads out slowing enveloping the black. The colour of the image has an impact on this theory though, the organic matter is white and it is seeping in a mephistophelian fashion over a black background, this could represent the infection as a virtuous thing as it is purging the corrupt society of today, represented as the black featureless void. Another theory could be that the matter is the 'Last of Us' and that they are exterminating the infected and degenerated people of the earth. Towards the end of this shot the matter slightly fades, this could represent the reintroduction of anarchy and rioting which is stated in the voice over.
The title sequence also reveals that the genre of the game is horror, it does this not only by using the black and white colours but also by using the audio news clips. The colours suggest the horror genre because its predominantly black and gloomy suggesting evil. Another way the title sequence suggests horror is that it uses biological matter that somewhat resembles a fungus ,bacteria or virus all which can be seen as bad because they have the potential to eliminate the human race.
